I am Judit Beke, the owner of Sunnyfields Golden Retriever kennel. I have been dealing with Golden Retrievers since 2001 and I have started breeding in 2005. What you have to do about this breed is that they are very friendly, family centered and active breed, Originally they are hunter dogs, originating from Scotland, Great Britain and have 200 years of history. Goldens were the direct descendants of some Russian circus dogs purchased by a member of the English gentry, Sir Dudley Marjoribanks, later the first Lord Tweedmouth. He wanted to improve the work of Pointers and Setters and create a dog which is ideal for gun dogs to retrieve shot waterfowl, such as ducks and upland game birds, during hunting and shooting parties They were were named ‘retriever’ because of their ability to retrieve shot game undamaged As indicated by their name, their coats occur in light golden to dark golden colors. The dog who you see now has a lighter, creamy color, this is preferred as well. The Lord strived to create a dog, which inherits the best qualities of the 3 breed involved in the breeding the short haired Retriever, the Setter and the Spaniel. These qualities are still present in the today Golden Retrievers. The temperament of the Golden Retriever is a hallmark of the breed and is described in the standard as “kindly, friendly and confident” who will to please. They are not “one-man dogs” and are generally equally amiable with both strangers and those familiar to them. Golden Retrievers make good family pets, particularly as they are patient with children. Because of these qualities, the Golden Retriever has become very popular in the past 100 years. They have two main types, the working breeding lines and the show dog breeding lines, like Eros, who you see here. The working types are rather used for hunting as as gun dogs to retrieve shot waterfowl Working tests and field trials are also done with them extensively. They are particularly valued for their high level of sociability towards people, calmness, and willingness to learn They can be seen in a lot of advertisements and million of movies as they are very popular. The ideal owner of this breed lives an active life and have enough time for the dog. They are very active and like to move a lot, dog school, or any other sport activities are essential for them They are fantastic companions to the children, very loyal to the family. Golden retrievers have an instinctive love of water and and their outer coat that lies flat against their bodies and repels water If you plan to have a guard dog, then I don not advise to have a Golden Retriever and they are not the ideal dog for you Their trusting, gentle disposition makes them a poor guard dog. are generally equally amiable with both strangers and those familiar to them. I also do not advise to people, who have allergy for shedding, as they shed a lot throughout the whole year. If you plan to leave your dog alone in the garden a lot, then you are not an ideal Golden Retriever owner as well. They are an extremely sensitive breed and always have to feel that they are part of the family They cannot stand the continuous kennel keeping, or being closed out. Fortunately, they live a very long life, 15 – to 18 years are not rare among them. It is quite surprising as they are a middle-big sized dogs and dogs of their size are usually do not have such a long life span. Of course one condition of this is that pets should be taken to a veterinarian for yearly checkups Golden Retrievers are known to have genetic disorders and other diseases. Hip, elbow and shoulder dysplasia and some eye problems are common in the breed. Serious breeders should regularly screen the genetics of their dogs to avoid these inheritable diseases. If you have a Golden Retriever, you should be very cautious with their feeding. Obesity is also common in the breed because Golden Retrievers love to eat. We usually feed them with super premium kibbles, beef and other nutritional supplements. In some rare cases, Goldens can have poultry allergy, so you have to watch out when you feed them. When I was a little girl I got my first Golden Retriever from may parents and I was very lucky with this dog. My dog, Erdőskerti Sunny is one of the most successful dog in Hungary and won almost everything he was entered for. He was Inter Champion, Veteran Wold Champion, best in show a Club winner for many years. He died in 2013 and he was the founder of my kennel and started me to go this way. Later on we bought several dogs from very valuable bloodlines, Eros, who you see now is from Spain. He is a very successful young male, and I am again very lucky with Him. Breeding work is a long term mind game, but we try to keep the best way. We take our dogs regularly to retrieve shot waterfowl, such as pheasants and rabbits during hunting and shooting parties. They work nicely, in many cases as well as Hungarian, or German vizslas. Their speciality is the water work in which they are extremely good. If you have a Golden puppy, it is very important to begin teaching them as early as it is possible. We start this work as early as 10-12 week old age, of course in a playful way. Besides shows, breeding and going for hunts, I am the president of the Hungarian Retriever and water dog association. This Association was founded in 2016 and we are concentrating on the quality breeding work and special events. The list of these events can be found on our website.
