Disturbing Footage Of A Terrified German Shepherd On The Set Of ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ I TMZ Live

HARVEY: WE GOT SOME VERY DISTURBING FOOTAGE OF A VERY BIG MOVIE THAT IS ABOUT TO COME OUT WIDE CALLED “A DOG’S PURPOSE” AND THE VIDEO SHOWS A TERRIFIED GERMAN SHEPHERD BEING CAJOLED AND PUSHED INTO THE WATER BY A TRAINER. CHARLES: YOU CAN SEE THIS DOG DOES NOT WANT TO GO IN IS LEANING AGAINST THE TRAINER TRYING TO RUN AWAY. WE’LL LET YOU LISTEN A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT’S GOING ON HERE.>>SHE WANTS TO GET AWAY. OH, THERE IT GOES. HE’S GOING TO END UP GOING IN WITH HIM.>>HERE, BOY.>>NO. CHARLES: I KNOW THAT THERE’S A PERSON THERE ON SET WHO’S LAUGHING BUT WE’VE SPOKEN TO PEOPLE CONNECTED TO THE PRODUCTION AND WE KNOW THAT THERE WAS AT LEAST ONE PERSON WHO WAS EXTREMELY DISTURBED BY WHAT THEY SAW GOING ON ON THE SET. HARVEY: BY THE WAY, WE ALSO HAVE THE DOG IN THE WATER. CHARLES: THE DOG DOES EVENTUALLY GET INTO THE WATER. WATCH WHAT HAPPENS. HARVEY: THIS IS THE DOG IN THE WATER. CLEARLY — CHARLES: THE DOG WENT UNDER. YOU CAN HEAR THE DIRECTOR OR SOMEONE YELLING CUT IT, CUT IT. HANDLERS RUSH IN. ACTUALLY, THE PEOPLE WHO PRODUCED THE MOVIE IS AMBLEN ENTERTAINMENT. UNIVERSAL IS THE DISTRIBUTOR. HARVEY: WE SENT THEM THE VIDEO BEFORE WE POSTED IT ON THE WEBSITE AND THEY SAID THAT THEY ARE LOOKING AT THIS. THEY SAID THEY’RE INVESTIGATING IT. THEY CARE DEEPLY ABOUT THESE ANIMALS AND AGAIN, SOMETIMES THERE ARE MANDATES THAT GO OUT FROM EXECUTIVES AND THEN THE WAY THEY’RE EXECUTE SLED A WHOLE OTHER THING. BUT THE QUOTE, FOSTERING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT AND ENSURING THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF OUR ANIMAL ACTORS WAS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE TO THOSE INVOLVED IN THOSE MAKING THE FILM AND WE WILL LOOK INTO THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THIS VIDEO. SO THEY ARE CLEARLY CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT THEY SAW. THEY’RE LOOKING AT OTHER CLIPS SO SEE IF THEY CAN GIVE THIS SOME CONTEXT. CHARLES: WE SHOULD EXPLAIN. THIS IS A POOL BUILT OUTSIDE WINNIPEG, CANADA, WHEN THEY WERE BUILDING THIS IN 2015. THEY HAVE OUTBOARD MOTORS CREATING THIS. THEY’RE TRYING TO RECREATE THIS SCENE OF A RUSHING RIVER AND THE DOG JUMPS IN IT’S JUST REALLY — HARVEY: IT’S TOUGH TO WATCH. CLEARLY: THE DIRECTOR THAT YOU HEARSAY CUT IT IS LASSE HALLSTROM AND HE HAS A LOT OF EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH ANIMALS IN THE PAST. HE DID “A DOG’S TAIL.” THIS IS NOT HIS FIRST RODEO. WHICH TO ME MAKES ME CONCERNED. CHARLES: WE DON’T KNOW THAT ANYTHING ELSE HAPPENED ON ANOTHER SET. HARVEY: AND SOMETIMES THERE ARE MULTIPLE DIRECTORS. CHARLES: WE’RE TOLD BY PEOPLE CONNECTED TO THIS THAT LASSE WAS ON SET DURING THE SHOOTING HERE. HARVEY: AGAIN, AMBLEN IS LOOKING INTO IT, THEY’RE INVESTIGATING IT. CHARLES: THE BEST WE KNOW THE DOG WAS OK. HARVEY: THE DOG SEEMS LIKE IT’S OK. VAN: VERY, VERY DISTURBING FOR HIM TO LOOK — TO LOOK AT IT. BUT THE GUY’S NAME IS LACY? HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER. CHARLIE: I THINK IT’S PRONOUNCED LASSE. VAN: THAT’S VERY SAD. I HAD A GERMAN SHE WERE HEARD GOING UP. — SHEPHERD GROWING UP. THAT’S BAD STUFF. CHARLIE: THERE HAVE A — THERE ARE A LOT OF MOVIES CHOOSING NOT TO USE ANIMALS ANYMORE AND USE ANIMATION INSTEAD. VAN: THERE’S AWAY NOT TO TAKE IT THAT FAR AND THE DOG LOOKS TERRIFIED. CHARLIE: IF THEY’RE USED ON SET THEY’RE A LOT OF TIMES REGULATED. FOR “WOLF OF WALL STREET” WHERE JONAH HAD TO STWALO — SWOLLA A GOLDFISH, PETA WAS THERE MAKING SURE THAT WENT OK. IT’S SAD THEY WEREN’T THERE. GARY: THE MOVIE — I DON’T KNOW IF YOU SAW IT. IT’S ABOUT THE REINCARNATION OF A DOG THROUGH DIFFERENT LIVES. THIS WAS ONE OF THEM. HARVEY: BY THE WAY, IT COULD WELL BE — THIS IS JUST MY GUT, THAT THIS DOG WAS PROBABLY OK DURING MOST OF THE FILMING BUT AT TIMES WASN’T OK AND THEN THE ISSUE IS WHEN THE DOG WASN’T OK, DO YOU TAKE A BREAK OR SAY WE HAVE TO GO ON BECAUSE WE’RE FILMING OR YOU HAVE ANOTHER DOG. CALLER: I’M CALLING FROM MINNESOTA, — MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA. I FIND THIS VERY CONCERNING. LET’S JUST HOPE IT’S NOT TRUE, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THIS COULD BE VERY DAMAGING TO THE MOVIE’S REPUTATION BEFORE IT’S EVEN OUT. “A DOG’S PURPOSE” IS SUPPOSED TO BE ENLIGHTENING. DOG LOVERS DON’T WANT TO GO TO SEE A MOVIE WHERE ANIMALS HAVE BEEN MISTREATED. IF IT’S NOT TRUE LET’S SAY ITS RATINGS WILL REFLECT ON ITS INNOCENCE.

  18. Misti D says:

First off…I think this may be overblown. None of us were there though so who could say?

Secondly, don't boycott a lovely film when even the movie's director said that he loves animals and that's why he made the movie. He also said they were investigating the matter. If it really was abusive, then the man who did it should face a penalty but the whole production shouldn't suffer because if one guy's actions.

Official statement from W. Bruce Cameron
First I want to thank everyone—and there have been literally thousands of you—who have written to express support. Your words and thoughts mean the world to us.
I found the video we’ve all seen to be shocking because when I was on set, the ethic of everyone was the safety and comfort of the dogs.
If the people who shot and edited the video thought something was wrong, why did they wait fifteen months to do anything about it, instead of immediately going to the authorities?
I have since viewed footage taken of the day in question, when I wasn’t there, and it paints an entirely different picture.
The written commentary accompanying the edited video mischaracterizes what happened. The dog was not terrified and not thrown in the water—I’ve seen footage of Hercules earlier that day joyfully jumping in the pool. When he was asked to perform the stunt from the other side of the pool, which was not how he had been doing it all day, he balked. The mistake was trying to dip the dog in the water to show him it was okay—the water wasn’t his issue, it was the location that was the issue, and the dog happily did the stunt when he was allowed to return to his original spot.
I also didn’t like it when Hercules’s head briefly went under water, but there was a scuba diver and a trainer in the pool to protect him. He loves the water, wasn’t in danger, and wasn’t upset.
On a movie where the mantra was the safety and comfort of the dogs, mistakes were made, and everything needs to be done to make sure those errors are not repeated. But the reason American Humane certifies that no animals were harmed during the making of the film is that no animals were harmed during the making of the film.
I celebrate animal rescue and am proud of the values that show up in A Dog’s Purpose. — W. Bruce Cameron 1/20/17

  22. Sunwah P. says:

i hope the movie wont be watched because of that.

  23. Brian Orozco says:

After watching this, I think I'm against them and I think I consider this as dog abuse and it's EXTREMELY wrong to do this to an innocent dog. The dog is REALLY terrified and, I actually own a dog and this just shatters my heart into a billion pieces because I feel really concerned about the German Shepherd. So, I think I will NEVER watch the movie because they did this to the dog😢🐶💔

  24. Let Loose says:

This dog is fine they were putting him in the water with someone and waiting till he got comfortable.

  25. Domingos Cunha says:

    the dog die?

  26. Jesmer Ragua says:

    did the dog die

  27. kelsey kelsey says:

why was the video edited like that?

  31. Alice Morton says:

Not going to watch this – was looking forward to it – not now

  32. My Boy says:

    Where's the middle footage?

  33. Must See Videos says:

unfortunate event. do i think is terrified? yes. but i don't it's harmful to the dog, even when the dog seemed to be "drowned". i assume these professionals know what they're doing. ideally of course, movies should avoid the use of real animals when necessary. i think being a law enforcer k-9 is bearing more risk to dogs compared to this but seems everybody okay with it. i don't find this video disturbing. well, what do i know, just my opinion.

  34. Belletaina says:

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate and say, just because of this movie being about animals, of course there is going to be some degree of abuse and/or mistreatment to an animal (actor) just for the sake of making this movie. We just happened to be able to witness it this time. I am in no way suggesting that the above excuses the behavior of the trainer (who should know when a dog is uncomfortable), im just saying that i don't know why some people expect animals to be treated fairly and well (especially behind the scenes) when it comes to our entertainment. Look at Zoos and Circus's for example. & F*** PETA!

  35. Calvin Alberts says:

I highly doubt this dog was "abused" the trainer simply put it in the water and pulled the dog back out. And how do we know what happend between the huge cut in the video because if it was really abusive why not show the entire video?

  36. Angoose Freezer says:

Wtf! I know that the dog can swim but that would be like throwing a kid that can't swim in rushing water! That's bullshit!

  37. Bryant hewes says:

That handler should get fired and his license taken. (If they have license's for handlers, I imagine they do) the dog is obviously scared of that water, if they were going to do a scene like that they should MAKE SURE the dog is properly trained for ragging waters. That dog I'm sure is well trained, just not a dog That likes water. They should of taken a lot more steps to make sure the dog is safe, I wanted to see this movie but now I don't think I'll see it. I won't pay to see it that's for

  38. sofiaaa mazzonnn says:

No one should have ever done that to a dog 🐶 ITS ABUSE AND THE PERSON 👩‍💻 WHO said cut is awesome

  39. Lilly Echazabal says:

This is animal Abuse..100% this is a trainer. I would beat the heck out of him and punch the guy that things is so funny. The camera man….You all about money. but you are all abusing this dogs.

  46. Majuere's Asinner says:

what about the concentration farms with caged animals being abused for foods and in harsh processing conditions. Argh! this makes me think animal cruelty is kinda okay and zoo's are doing a better job taking care of almost non existent features, I thought cops or trainers were better skilled with dogs lol and this is how we treat the good kinds also with a audience :/ wheres the love gone…

  52. big spoon says:

Difficult to watch – the dog is clearly terrified and unwillingly to participate.  A dog purpose is not to be mistreated.

  53. Besiktas1903cArsi says:

Grow up people. The people doing it know what they are doing. That dog is probably loved, treated and fed better than most dogs. Why do all these animal lovers have to be so extreme. It`s like feminists or vegans.

  57. Melben says:

People who abuse dogs should go to hell because you can't abuse a dog just for a movie scene…..disgusting

  58. Killer Bees says:

I just wanted to say to those of you want to rush off and spend a buck on this movie, why don't you think about donating the money to your local animal shelter? Also, for those of you who will be eating popcorn and drinking a pop, why don't you consider using that money to buy a bag of food or some toys for the lonely dogs at the shelter? While you are at the shelter, you could think about how long this movie is and spend that same amount of time walking one of the dogs in the shelter. I’m sure that would make his day if not is life. While you are walking your new friend and watching him wag his tail, I’m sure you will find a dog's purpose.

They should have never put that dog in that position

  62. Francesco Bernoulli says:

it kinda makes my laugh at all these people boycotting "A Dogs Purpose" in the beginning the Professional dog trainer was just trying to get the dog to get used to the water as you can see he instantly pulls the dog back up when he saw the dog didn't like the water also if you see the original video you can see the other half was a edit and was taken at a different time this is probably when the dog finally got used to the water also you can see people in the water looking after the dog on the water (this is just my opinion on the matter I'm can understand why you disagree with me)

  63. mimerthebeamer1 says:

  69. Jessica S, NAPLES FL says:

    a dog's "PURPOSE"?
This sounds like the people behind the film see animals as a COMMODITY, not as living beings with valid feelings.

  70. Hewan Teka says:

People just care about making money there's days, they just became wild animals!!

  71. JoestarBites says:

  79. Campsie Grothendieck says:

  83. Leticia Cardenas says:

    it's fake

  84. Donovan Amadeus says:

    that's not a trainer… that's an asshole

  85. wrenchman555 says:

ok// dog is not ok about this no how no way second where are the technical people or so  called to check the flow speed of the water both on top and the bottom because if you look it is to fast for the dog and this is why it was pulled under.  The dog probably knew this more then those idiots .  The trust factor went out the window for that animal l am sure. l would never put my pet in a situation like that ever.

  86. Jos Oleta says:

so sad to see hurts my heart. yet some people that are outraged by these still eat meat (whichmeans they just killed an animal)  and use cruelty products . but its good to at least see that no one agrees with this .

  90. gAy RiGhTs says:

AND THEY KNOW HACHI A DOGS TALE

  91. Freeman Grace says:

Boycott Amblyn and Universal productions! If the dog was not afraid then why the resistance to the water? Also, if the dog was "never in any danger," then why was dog flushed underwater and why the need for rescue divers to rescue the dog? It's clear the dog was forced into trouble and required rescue. The video doesn't lie, but those who use animals for profit lie everyday!

  92. Angel Hernandez says:

    the movie is still good

  93. talkingalwayz says:

put this gsd thru such a horrifying ordeal all in the name of greed! poor dog trusts his handlers and in return.. it was fearing for its life! look at the force of that water! the handler in the water couldn't even get to the dog fast enough because of the force!
