Military Dog Reunited With Soldier 5 Years Later

TONIGHT IN ARLINGTON SOLDIER HAS HIS MILITARY DOG BACK. CRISTIN SEVERANCE JOINS US TO EXPLAIN HOW THIS FINALLY HAPPENED. Reporter: BRIAN HENDERSON SAYS HE ALWAYS PLANNED TO ADOPT THE DOG HE SERVED WITH OVERSEAS. INSTEAD THE ARMY GAVE THE DOG TO A FAMILY IN NORTH CAROLINA. NOW WITH THE HELP OF HIS FAMILY MEMBERS, LAWMAKERS AND ATTORNEYS, HIS BATTLE BUDDY IS BACK HOME. IT’S A MOMENT BRIAN HENDERSON HAS WAITED SO LONG FOR. HE STILL CAN’T BELIEVE IT IS REAL. IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE. IT’S SO HARD TO BELIEVE. SIT. GOOD BOY. Reporter: RYAN AND SATAN WENT TO WORK TOGETHER. THIS DOG SAVED HIS LIFE. THERE ARE STORIES HE WILL NEVER TELL YOU THAT I’VE HEARD HIM TELL ME HOW THE DOG HAS SAVED HIM IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS. Reporter: SATAN WAS RYAN’S DOG. THEY WERE SEPARATED FIVE YEARS AGO THIS MONTH. RYAN HAD A GRAND MAL CAESAR — SEIZURE IN AFGHANISTAN. FROM THE DAY HE GOT HOOKED UP WITH THE DOG, EVERY DAY THEY WERE ON A MISSION OR THEY WERE TRAINING. THAT IS HIS LIFE. Reporter: RYAN RECOVERED, RETIRED AND STARTED THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO ADOPT SATAN. THE ARMY HAD GIVEN THE DOG AWAY. HE WAS ONE OF MORE THAN 200 MILITARY DOGS ADOPTED TWO AGENCIES AND CIVILIANS AFTER THE ARMY ENDED THE TED PROGRAM IN 2014. THE HAMMER SAY THEY WERE NEVER CONTACTED. NEVER GIVEN A CHANCE TO ADOPT THEIR DOGS. MY PHONE NUMBER AND EMAIL HAVE BEEN THE SAME SINCE BEFORE I JOINED THE ARMY. Reporter: RYAN EVENTUALLY FOUND THE FAMILY THAT ADOPTED SATAN. THE FAMILY MADE IT CLEAR THEY WOULD NOT BE GIVING THE DOG BACK. RYAN CONTACTED LAWMAKERS. THE REAL SHAME OF IT IS THE ARMY DID NOT FOLLOW THE LAW. AS CONGRESS LAID IT OUT. Reporter: HE TOLD HIS STORY TO CBS 11 LAST MAY. MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL ANIMAL CONFERENCE SAW OUR STORY AND ASKED RYAN TO SPEAK AT THEIR ANNUAL EVENT. WHEN I WENT TO THE CONFERENCE THAT’S WHAT EVERYBODY TOLD ME. IF SOMEBODY CAN HELP YOU THERE’S A LADY HERE THIS WEEKEND. YOU NEED TO TALK TO HER BEFORE YOU LEAVE. Reporter: THAT WAS AN ATTORNEY, MARILYN FORBES. SHE SAID GETTING HER BACK WOULD BE ENOUGH PAYMENT FOR ME. Reporter: THEY FILED A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE FAMILY. I TOLD MARILYN I WAS PREPARED FOR THE LONG HAUL. Reporter: AGAIN THE RICHARD SAENZ VOWED TO FIGHT. ULTIMATELY AT THE END OF THE DAY I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO STOP THAT. I’M GOING TO TRY. Reporter: DAYS AFTER THAT INTERVIEW RYAN GOT A CALL FROM MARILYN. HE TOLD ME THAT MR. RICHARDSON DECIDED TO GIVE SATAN BACK TO ME. I CALLED MY DAD. HE SAID I DON’T EVEN HAVE THE WORDS. WE ARE GETTING SATAN BACK. WE HAVE TO GO NOW. I SAID LET’S GO. THE FATHER AND SON DROVE THROUGH THE NIGHT. A DAY LATER RYAN AND SATIN DC WERE REUNITED IN NORTH CAROLINA. WE GOT TO PLAY AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME. THEN WE CAME HOME. Reporter: A TRIP THAT IS STILL SURREAL. ON THE WAY HOME WE ARE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND I’M LOOKING AT THEM IN THE BACKSEAT AND I DON’T REALLY BELIEVE HE IS BACK THERE. Reporter: RYAN SAYS THEY ARE A LITTLE BIGGER AND A LETTER OLDER — LITTLE OLDER. WE ARE BOTH GETTING OLD. THE TWO PICKED UP LIKE NO TIME HAD PASSED. WITH SATAN OBEYING COMMANDS AND CHECK JUST LIKE HE WAS TRAINED. YOU SAY IT, THEY CAN CONFUSE THE DOGS. I WONDERED IF HE WOULD, HE NEVER SKIPPED A BEAT. Reporter: THE RICHARD SAENZ DID NOT GIVE A REASON WHY THE CHANGE OF HEART. RYAN DOESN’T NEED ONE. I DON’T KNOW WHAT CHANGED HIS MIND I’M JUST REALLY GLAD THAT HE DID. HE DID A GREAT THING. MY SON NOT BE HERE TODAY IF IT WERE NOT FOR THAT DOG. IT’S ALL BETTER. Reporter: EVEN THOUGH THE FIGHT FOR SATAN IS OVER, RYAN SAYS HE IS NOT DONE. HE VOWED TO HELP THE OTHER HANDLERS TRYING TO GET THERE TEDD DOGS BACK. THE INSPECTOR GENERAL IS INVESTIGATING THIS ENTIRE ADOPTION SITUATION. THE REPORT SHOULD BE DONE THIS SUMMER. WE WILL SHARE WITH YOU AS SOON AS WE HAVE IT. I’M CRISTIN SEVERANCE.

Please don't give that name to any living thing but I loved the story would have to change his name

all the retired dogs from the army must be automatically be given to their handlers right away….. i think, that would be the only way for the both of them to enjoy life away from life threathening environment…..
lets give them both a chance to have more time together for the last remaining days of these dogs… cmon, theyre fighting dogs, do you think civilians were all able to understand the way they are trained? the only person who could understand them is their handlers..make them enjoy life together….

Wow… love it happy to see you together. I lost my dog to a family. I miss her day and night it has been 2-3 years and every day I think she may run away from them and find her way to my house.

    I think that's complete bullshit.
I'm sure you've made your country proud. But asking for the dog back after 5 years is selfish and unfair to the dog. The animal bonded with someone else after being bounced around from person to person during training, then to you and then to another man that clearly loved him.
What you did was selfish, and mean and your actions hurt an American family.
