Proposed NYC Dog Park Draws Opposition

PARK NEAR AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. PARENTS ARE FIGHTING BACK. REENA ROY EXPLAINS THE CONCERNS. Reporter: PS110 IS HOME TO MORE THAN 350 STUDENTS FROM PRE- K TO 5th GRADE AND SOON THE LITTLE ONES MAY HAVE NEW NEIGHBORS. IT DOESN’T WORK. Reporter: PUPS LIKE THESE ARE WHAT PARENTS AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS IMAGINE WITH A NEW DOG PARK SET TO OPEN DIRECTLY ACROSS THE SCHOOL ENTRANCE. IT’S NOT EVEN 20 FEET FROM THE ENTRANCE, THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO OUR SCHOOL. IT IS TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT IN TERMS OF SMELL, SOUNDS, JUST THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE. THERE ARE SO MANY CONCERNS, HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF THE STUDENTS. SOME CHILDREN HAVE ALLERGIES, SOME ARE SCARED. Reporter: LAND IS OWNED BY COOP DEVELOPMENT NEXT DOOR AND RUN BY HILLMAN HOUSING OPERATION. A MANAGER SAID THE PARK WON’T BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, ONLY COOP RESIDENTS WHO ARE REGISTERED DOG OWNERS. SOME SIDE WITH THE SCHOOL. WE DON’T WANT A DOG PARK AND WE WANT TO BE GOOD NEIGHBORS. Reporter: PARENTS AND RESIDENTS SAY THEY FIRST GOT WORD OF THE PROPOSAL IN AUGUST AND SINCE HAVE BEEN FIGHTING IT REACHING TO LOCAL LEADERS AND RECENTLY CREATING A PETITION AGAINST IT. Reporter: MORE THAN 240 SIGNATURES AND COUNTING. A LOT OF PARENTS ARE WITH US, DON’T WANT THE DOG PARK HERE. WOULD YOU WANT YOUR CHILD GOING TO A SCHOOL WHERE A DOG PARK IS LITERALLY IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL? Reporter: DESPITE THE CONCERNS IT HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE BOARD AND WILL BE FINISHED BY SPRING. IT WILL HAVE STRICT RURALS TO KEEP THINGS CLEAN AND ORDERLY, NO DOGS DURING SCHOOL, ALMOST LOCKED AT ALL TIMES AND ONLY RESIDENTS WHO PAY FOR A KEY CAN GET IN.
