Vegan Bulldog Q&A: Ooby Birthday Special

Hi! It’s Emily from Bite Size Vegan and
welcome to another vegan nugget, actually, a very special vegan nugget. This nugget is
all about Ooby. So, let’s put away the formalities and get up, close, and personal with the real star of Bite Size Vegan. So this is the real star of Bite Size Vegan; this is Ooby. And I’ve gotten a lot of questions about Ooby over the time that I’ve done Bite Size Vegan.
So, I thought today, I would just go through some of the questions and tell you a little bit
about Ooby and her history, and who she is. And this is a totally unscripted video which
is really uncomfortable for me but I wanted to just share with you Ooby’s life a little
bit. So, one of the things people ask is how old Ooby is. Actually, today is her birthday…
where are you going? Okay. Ooby moved, so I moved with her because this is her day. Today
is her actual birthday April 6th 2015 is her 8th birthday. She’s 8 years old. It’s actually
the day before my birthday but I don’t really celebrate my birthday, I celebrate Ooby’s. {{Ooby groans}}
The other main question I get about Ooby is her name. Where does it come from? What does it
mean? So, I call her Ooby, O-O-B-Y. Her full name is Oobedoob Benubi, which is kind of
ridiculous but what it is, it was a spoof on Star Wars awhile back called Thumb Wars where they did the whole
video with thumbs and Obi Wan Kanobi became Oobedoob Benubi so that’s her full name,
but she goes by “Ooby” or “Oobertons” or “the Boo” or Oobs”. Now, another question I get about Ooby is
what do I feed her. I actually did an entire video on this called ‘What I Feed my Vegan
Dog” or something like that. I’ll put it up. So, Ooby eats vegan food, it’s specifically V Dog food
and then I mix in some wet Halo Food sometimes but you can watch that video to see exactly what I feed
her. And a lot of people ask, is it healthy to feed a dog a vegan diet? It absolutely
is. I would argue it is the healthiest thing to feed a dog especially given what
we put in pet food. You check out my video about “Can Pets Be Vegan?” and “What’s Really in Pet
Food?’ to get all of the gory details on that. And as far as Ooby’s health is concerned.
She has a long history of chronic health issues and multiple surgeries. If you watch my video
on pet breeding, I talk a little bit about her history and the number of surgeries that she’s
been through. But, suffice to say, Ooby is the healthiest that she’s ever been. She wasn’t
always vegan, but since she’s been vegan these last handful of years, her health
has improved so much. We just went to a new vet here, because we just moved here, and the
vet said that they had never seen an English Bulldog this healthy. Now in our videos, you
usually see Ooby sitting around and not really doing much. She’s very good at that and she’s very
good at sleeping which on Instagram, you’ll see Ooby sleeping a lot. She’s actually in really good
shape. My bed is…not this bed, but the bed I sleep on is about 3 and a half feet or so
tall and Ooby jumps on that no problem. She also loves to go trailblazing or for longer
walks and while she moves very slowly most of the time, if you drop a kernel of food,
she is like a ninja so being vegan has done nothing except vastly improve Ooby’s health and
then there’s the peace of mind it give me knowing that her life does not depend on others’
suffering. Ooby’s given up on paying attention to this. But it’s her birthday so we are going
to let her do whatever she wants to do. Alright, so I readjusted again to accommodate Ooby, but
oh and I woke her up too. She’s not happy about that. So, another question that I get a lot about
Ooby is; where does she come from? Where did I get her? Is she a rescue? Did I get her
from a breeder? I talk a little bit about her origins again in the pet breeding video.
Ooby is basically a breeder reject. Most breeders will give a one year ‘warranty’ so to speak
on their dogs, so that if you have a lot of medical issues with your puppy within the first year you
can basically trade them in for another model, so to speak which is kind of horrific and
really speaks to how we treat these animals as objects to a great extent. So Ooby is one
of those dogs that had so many health issues, just a myriad of health issues. She’s basically
defective or a ‘lemon dog’. So, I got Ooby when she was nine weeks old and she’d
already had so many health problems. One of them which was kind of funny was that she was too fat to support her body weight, so she dragged herself around on her front paws, and they
weren’t sure if she was ever going to stand right, like if something was wrong with her
legs, but she stands fine. Ooby had 5 surgeries before she was 1 year old. As I say in
my dog breeding video, English Bulldogs are really the poster children for the perils of pure
breeding. Every pure breed has so many issues because the genetic pool that we use to breed
dogs is so small. But we breed these animals to look the way we want them to look and to
have that aesthetic. It has nothing to do with functionality, or their own health. And the
Bulldog is the most extreme example of that. Nature would never make this. I hope you enjoyed
this special nugget all about Ooby, the true star of Bite Size Vegan, {{Ooby groans}}, who needs her beauty rest. Now, we’ll get back to the Dr. Greger series next Monday but then there will be a small
hiatus before we do the final 3 nutrients with him because he had a bit of a scheduling
conflict. If you liked this video and the break from routine to a certain extent, and the Ooby stardon, please give it a thumbs up and share it around to spread the Ooby. If you are new here, do

Wednesday and some Fridays’ I would love to have you as a subscriber. If you would like to support Bite Size Vegan and get Ooby some more vegan kibble, check

Really cute and touching video. I have to say I was never a big animal lover. I had a dog growing but she pretty much bonded with my mom so I didn't really do much with her other than feed her and walk her. A dogs a dog right? Well, fast forward 20 years and my husband, son talked me into rescuing a lab/pit mix…oh boy…I was not happy…all I could think of was waking up early and walks in the pouring rain and fur EVERYWHERE !!! Aaaaaahhhh! But I caved and we got her…Shelby. It was a difficult time…her adjusting to us and vise versa. I actually started feeling resentful toward her which I was so upset with myself about. It's not her fault she sheds…it's not her fault that she eats some grass and pukes it up and I accidentally step in it in the middle of the night in the dark trying to use the bathroom…sigh…anyway…I was going through a reeeeeaaaally tough time not too long ago and sitting on my couch crying my eyes out …now mind u..Shelby knows she's not allowed on the couch…due to the fur getting on everything..etc…it was just me and her at home…she came up to me…at first rested her head on the couch cushion while wagging her tail…then….very carefully…and very slowly jumped up on the couch (which would normally mean sudden death ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) beside me and rested her head on my chest, looked into my eyes and let out the deepest sigh….now maybe I can't fully explain how incredible this was because she knows the no couch rule and she never jumps on it…ever…but in that moment..seeing me in utter despair she just decided…fuck it…I'm gonna go and comfort this bitch…haha…ever since then I have a completely different relationship with her. I don't merely just see her as a fur monster…but as a loving member of our family. Its really interesting how our relationship has been evolving..she senses that my resentment toward her has gone away and we've become closer than ever. And yes….I lifted the couch ban….I just invest in a lot of lint rollers…she's worth it. So happy birthday to Ooby. You gals were meant for each other . Just like me and my Shelbs.;)

I recently adopted a Newfoundland puppy, and I am feeding him a vegan dog food, but am still feeding bones and chews because he needs to chew so much!! If anyone can recommend a vegan option, I would love it so much :). He is constantly chewing on wood and sticks :-/

Love the Ooby! ย She's so adorable! ย I can relate to the strange noises she makes… well; not me but I have two beagles and sometimes while they're sleeping I have both of them snoring at the same time or baking, growling and grunting in their sleep; only the younger beagle makes the funniest noises when she growls; it's almost as if she's saying "nom, nom, nom, nom" over and over. ย I love my girls!ย
I personally do not find it distracting in your video's with Oooby making her noises; I find them cute! ย You should keep her in the vids more often! ย ๐Ÿ™‚ ย I'm sure she wouldn't mind. ย ๐Ÿ™‚

Absolutely loved the video clips of Ooby as a puppy!

  22. Passarinho Su says:

The people who looked at Ooby as a defective dog were the ones who had a defect – meaning, their heart was so cold that they didn't see that in fact she was going to become a pretty little lady super cute and a star in her own right! She's so cute. And best of all, she found you (or the other way around ah) and that's how it was meant to be =)

Not that I believe in horoscopes or whatever, but my birthday is also in April. We're all Aries (it's my excuse to find something that I share with you and feel a bit closer to your awesomeness – is that even a word?) =D

  23. Metamorfotika Channel says:

OMG you are an angel eye opener, thank you so much for answering my concerns. I have to white boxers we saved from a tragic destiny and we have already spent with the vet their genetic health problems and allergies. Best thing I can do for them is sterilized them, same thing I did for my cats, Iยดm gonna feed them vegan, great points on that thank you so much. Sending you love from Mexico!

  26. Sophia Lin says:

I would love love love to switch my dog to a vegan lifestyle as well but since I still live with my parents and my dog is a family dog, it's kind of impossible since almost everyone believes that dogs and cats are 'carnivores'

  28. Amy Zaragoza says:

    I LOVE OOBY!!!!!!!!

  29. Kimberly Harrison says:

I am sorry but this is wereย  draw the line dogs are carnivores and not far for us that are herbivore to make them eat what we are meant to eat! They do not have taste buds like ours they have teats buds for amino acidic. Their digestive system is for animals meat. It would be like making a bear or a wolf a vegan!

  39. Barbie Pena says:

I subscribed. I am a vegetarian, but shy away from the preachy vegans/vegetarians. You didn't come across like that, you seem like a caring and laid back person. Having a vegan dog is controversial for sure, but I thoroughly enjoyed your video, and look forward to seeing your other videos about ooby. I just posted a video about my dog's q&a as well haha.

  56. shannon popesco says:

ooby is a sweety I love her

  57. Bipley says:

You can't force a carnivorous animal to be vegan and that probably contributed to her declining health. It's terrible that she's gone but this kind of shit has to stop and vegan pet owners need to realize that their animals are physiologically different from humans and cannot follow the same kind of diet a human can. This is simple science. I never comment on videos and I'm sure dozens of people have said the same thing but Jesus fucking Christ. No matter what your intentions are this is animal abuse.
